Just a quick trip across Sydney Harbour Bridge from the city is beautiful Neutral Bay. This lower north-shore nook, popular with professionals, is one of those rare spots that has everything you’ll ever need, without the party central pace.
Nostalgia abounds in this delightful harbourside village. Once-upon-a-time Neutral Bay was a port for incoming international vessels (hence it’s name), as well as an alternative community for arty bohemian types. It was also the former home of children’s author May Gibbs, who delighted children worldwide with her famous tales of Snugglepot & Cuddle Pie.
The Bustling main artery Military Road starts and finishes with an endless stream of variety shopping and quality eating and drinking. At the southern end, The Oaks Hotel, the area’s historical drinking hole, is popular with both young and old. Grill your own steak or enjoy a gourmet pizza in the beer garden under their famous oak tree, or arrange a private party in one of the lovely historical private rooms or terraces.
Neutral Bay nightlife is a little more laid back and refined than city-side, but entertaining all the same. Movie buffs will adore the classic Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in neighbouring Cremorne; wine connoisseurs the great line-up of small bars along Young St, including the popular Firefly, and Japanese fans will go “teppenyaki” over Kyushu and Ju Ge Mu & Shimbashi restaurants. In need of the proverbial late night snack? Then 24 hour restaurant Maisy’s, renowned for its all-day breakfast will more than suffice.
Gorgeous views, character homes, popular schools and quick access to the city, make Neutral Bay marvelously magnetic to everyone who crosses her path.
